Houston is a picturesque village in Renfrewshire with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Situated approximately 5 miles northwest of Paisley, it serves as the centre of the historic civil parish of Houston and Killellan.
The village's historic centre is a designated conservation area, featuring traditional white cottages, some from the 17th century, along North and South Streets. Notable landmarks include the remnants of the 16th-century Houston Castle, associated with Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Additionally, the Barochan Cross, an 11-foot-tall Celtic Christian cross possibly dating to the 8th century, was originally located near Houston before being moved to Paisley Abbey for preservation.
Nature enthusiasts can explore the Craigends Yew, an ancient tree believed to be around a thousand years old, making it one of the oldest living things in Renfrewshire. The area also boasts two ancient wells, St. Fillan's Well near Kilallan Kirk and St. Peter's Well, both once considered to have healing powers.
Houston is served by two primary schools, Gryffe and St Fillian’s. There is also Gryffe High School. The area is served by a number of nurseries.
For outdoor activities, the Bridge of Weir - Houston Circular trail offers a scenic route through green fields, farmland, and woodlands, suitable for walking and cycling.
Houston maintains a strong sense of community, with local pubs, small shops, and a post office contributing to its village charm. The parish church, Houston and Killellan Kirk, lies to the east of the old village, while the 19th-century Roman Catholic church, St. Fillan's, is situated south of Main Street.
Located within the Gryffe Valley, Houston is easily accessible from nearby towns and cities, making it a desirable location for those seeking a blend of historical charm and natural beauty in a tranquil setting.
Whether you're interested in exploring historical sites, enjoying outdoor activities, or experiencing village life, Houston offers a unique glimpse into Scotland's rich heritage.
